5 Unique Ways to Celebrate Memorial Day Weekend This Year

5 Unique Ways to Celebrate Memorial Day Weekend This Year

Whether you’re aiming for some lowkey relaxation or want to have a long weekend away, there are plenty of ways to spend Memorial Day weekend. Not that neighborhood cookouts aren’t great, but life has changed a ton over the past year, so it seems kind of appropriate to play around with new traditions. We asked around the office for our coworkers’ ideal early summer three-day weekends. Read on for our five favorite celebration ideas!

1. Get Creative With the Grill

Burgers and dogs are all fine and good (okay, they’re delicious….) but sometimes it’s nice to change it up, especially if you’re getting the pod together. Our personal favorite burger alternative is grilled pizza. Yes, you read right: grilled pizza.

Grilled pizza is actually the ultimate warm weather party food. Ask your friends to bring their toppings of choice; you handle the dough, sauce, and cheese. Grilling pizza is shockingly easier than hamburgers, and it just allows for way more personalization. Plus, since the only thing touching the grill is the dough, your vegan and vegetarian friends won’t have to worry about cross contamination.

2. Truck Bed Camping

If soaking in the sunset or gazing at the stars is your idea of a good time, this Pinterest-inspired road trip might be exactly what you’re looking for.

Grab our Flip Mattress Topper and set it in the bed of your truck (or the back of your SUV if your seats fold all the way down). Bring either your full size Coop pillows or our travel pillows, your favorite blanket, and quite literally drive into the sunset.

For stargazing fanatics, use a light pollution map to find an area near you that gets dark enough for you to see the sky clearly. On your way out of town, indulge in fast food, grab a new book, and prepare to take in some peace and quiet with yourself or your boo. Just be sure to double check the forecast!

3. Backyard Staycation

If camping sounds great but driving during Memorial Day weekend doesn’t, have yourself a backyard staycation. This one is great for families with little ones, as you can invite both kids and parents over for some slumber party fun.

Pitch a few tents, break out the Slip ‘N Slide, and plan a fun campfire-friendly menu (s’mores and foil pack dinners are a fun and easy go-to). Kids can play and craft while parents sit back and relax. If you have a projector, you can also hang a sheet up on a clothesline and watch a movie under the stars.

4. Stay in Bed

Need a break? Use your three-day weekend to catch up on some much needed R&R. Some research suggests that staying in bed all weekend can actually be good for you, especially if you feel like you’re running on empty. A recent study published by the Sleep Research Society contradicts the long-held belief that you can’t catch up on sleep over the weekend. “It seems like you actually can compensate by catching up on sleep during weekends,” the study’s lead author, Torbjörn Åkerstedt, told Business Insider. “This is in effect an argument for lazing around all weekend. There probably is an upper limit, but it’s anyway better to increase on the weekend rather than not doing it at all.”

So what we’re saying is… stay in bed all weekend long if you want. Snooze, read, Netflix and chill, and just do nothing.

One of our favorite ways to spend the day (and night) in bed is by indulging in some rated G bad behavior: pizza and movies in bed! Something about eating something that can be super messy in a place we prefer to keep super clean is just fun! Plus, if you have a waterproof mattress protector, all you’ll be doing is stripping the sheets and calling it a day. No harm, no foul.

5. Explore Your Town

If you haven’t heard of randonauting, don’t worry; it’s a lot less complex than it sounds. Essentially, you download the Randonautica app, set your coordinates, and decide how far you want to go from home. You can choose to walk, drive, or bike, and the app will give you a random location to venture to.

This is a really fun and interesting way to spend your day—especially if you haven’t been out and about exploring new places in a while. The reason we like using the app is that it’s, you guessed it, totally random, allowing for a true adventure. Experiencing new doesn’t necessarily mean taking a trip or trying something wild. It’s as easy as walking around your own city or town with fresh eyes and a new perspective.
